Avoid Kobo ebook reader battery drain issue

Kobo eBook readers sometimes have an issue with battery management. While searching reddit I found an explanation:

With a little bit of observation I found that if the Kobe starts to go to sleep (screen changed to sleep display AND the backlight has not gone out) pressing the power button to stop the sleep function at this time leaves the Kobe in some undefined state at about 50% of the time (appears to work normally though the battery drain is high). The Kobo WILL remain like this until you perform a full power cycle on the ereader.

Exactly this happened to my Kobo Clara BW. I remember that I pressed the sleep button twice in quick succession. The next evening the battery was completely empty even though I charged it to 100 % the day before.

Change kobo settings to avoid this issue

I decided to change some settings on my kobo. So I cannot accidentally trigger this problematic state:

  • kobo ebook reader main page
  • More
  • Settings
  • Energy saving and privacy

Energy saving and privacy settings

Energy Saving

  • Automatically go to sleep after: 5mins
  • Automatically power off after: 30 mins (this setting was on Never before)

Sleepcover

  • Automatically sleep and wake up: Off

Now the kobo ebook reader will always completely turn off after a while. This is no problem. It only takes a few seconds to boot.
